How do I launch my boat from your slipway?

Please make an online "Boat Launching Booking". We limit our boat launches to maximum 20 boats per day if you are not camping with us. The "park and go" rule applies. STRICTLY: No useage of our facilities or amenities if you are not camping.

If you are camping with us, kindly ensure you completed/selected the "boat launching option" on your booking and provided all the requested information online. Failure to do so may result in our refusal for you to utilize our slipway until all the required information and licenses are provided.  Main principles which must be adhered to by Small Vessel Launch Sites like us:

  • All boats must be licensed and registered for usage on the Gamtoos River. (We will need to verify your documents before your launch. Kindly keep it handy.)
  • Skippers launching LOG must be completed on arrival in our "Reception/Office". The logbook entry will be used as a check and balance for compliance purposes. Any boat or crew found to launch without completing this form before launching or signing out on the logbook will immediately be suspended and launching rights revoked.
  • Only ONE BOAT in the launching bay at a time. Immediately remove your trailer after launching your boat from the slipway and park it in the designated area whilst out on the river.
  • Every person in control of a vessel above 15hp must be in possession of a valid SAMSA approved Skippers License.
  • Operate your boat responsibly at all times with due consideration for small craft and other users of the river.
Should I make a reservation or booking in advance?

YES! Why? For the following reasons:

  • It confirms if we have availability for your stay. We are doing something right and it shows with our site reservations. We are a weekend away destination because of our location (30-45min from most of the surrounding towns like Port Elizabeth, Hankey, Jeffreysbay and Humansdorp to name a few).  We have had fully booked weekends (6 weekends in a row is our current record) unexpectedly for weeks ahead that we are fully booked or reach 100% occupancy and had to turn away camping clients arriving without a reservation or booking.
  • We are aware of your pending arrival or stay. Being on a dairy farm we do sometimes get busy with the cows or we are busy in the caravan park with routine maintenance and not always in "Reception" to welcome you.
  • We can ensure all the admin is done before your arrival and you are registered on our access gate system. Only one contact number is registered per site. Your gate access automatically lapses with check-out.
  • Our "real-time" system send important reminders, updates and information regarding your future booking with us and enables us to communicate much more efficiently with you.
  • Check-in process is easy, fast and efficient as your information and booking invoice has been raised before your arrival and any corrections or discrepancies have been made to ensure you get to your vacation sooner!
  • It ensures you are aware and accepted all our terms and conditions, rates and facilities we offer pertaining to your stay.
Do you allow day visitors?

What fish can be caught in the river?

The Gamtoos river is a fisherman's haven with a wide variety of salt water species available that attract enthusiasts throughout the year. Don't forget to get the necessary fishing licenses and permits, adhere to the quotas, catch and release where you can and respect Marine Protected Areas and species. We are perfectly situated approximately 3km from the sea or river mouth. The most popular species caught here are:

  • Small Spotted Grunter
  • Dusky Cob
  • Leerfish or "Garrick"
  • Butterfly Ray
  • Indian Threadfish
  • Common Seabream
  • Cape Stumpnose
  • White Steenbras
  • Skipjack

Each site has individual taps supplying municipal water. Electricity supply points are available and clearly numbered for each site. Preference is provided with multiple availability for Blue Electric Caravan Plugs. Limited normal three point 220V plugs are available as a shared option for our tented customers.

Do you have a braai and grid on your sites?

Each site has it's own braai with grid.  We have also upgraded our sites with individual lights.

Do you have a shop or restuarant?

We sell ice, wood, charcoal and water from our "reception office" throughout the year.  We are currently considering various options at enabling us to provide a "tuckshop" during the festive season for our camping families. We will update you soon as this is a reality.

We do not have a restaurant on site, but "Mondplaas Take-aways" are well known for their "vetkoek", "home made pies" and "rooosterbrood" options for a quick bite. The Gamtoos Ferry Hotel (4km down road) has a restuarant with limited menu options. Alternatively there is a list of various recommendable restaurants in the small town of Jeffrey's Bay  (15km away).

Do we offer long term or permanent sites?

No we do not offer permanent sites.  We do offer long term monthly stay (maximum duration of 2 month stays) options at a discounted rate to all travelers/campers and seniors on selected sites and are subject to availability certain times of the year.

Do we rent or hire out caravans?

No, we do not hire out caravans.  We can however provide details of various companies that have placed/erected and hire out their caravans at Big Fish Caravan Park on request. We cannot recommend or condone any caravan rental company as they arrange it with their customers directly. We can only provide details according to the popularity we have observed.
